How To Start a Non-Profit Charity In Canada: Part 2

In our previous blog, which was part one to starting a non profit organization in Alberta, we considered some initial considerations. Click here to read the first part of this blog.

There are a few additional things you want to keep in mind and look out for when forming your non-profit. The first is that there is a great deal of research needed in order to be successful. Take the time to research what it is that you are planning and also take the time to find out all you need to know before proceeding. Next you want to make sure you or someone on your team has some financial knowledge and that you consult with an accountant. As a non-profit, you will be dealing with money in a charitable context and you will also have to deal with operating costs and expenses. Having some financial background or knowledge can help make the entire process smoother.

Another thing to keep in mind is that starting a non-profit is not as easy as it may appear. You need to have all your ducks in a row in order to make sure that the entire process is going to go smoothly. Lastly, your board of directors is a critical part of your operation and having people on your board that are not effective can cause complications. You want people that are also invested in the non-profit and that are also going to have the necessary expertise to help with governance.
